This maps areas in the southwestern states that were surveyed by exploration parties from the U.S. Dept. of the Interior and the U.S. Smithsonian Institution, especially the surveys conducted by F.V. Haydn, J.W. Powell and, in California, J.D. Whitney. Haydn made the first survey of the Yellowstone region of Wyoming; Powell made the first survey of the Grand Canyon; Whitney made the first survey of the highest mountain peak in the lower 48 states, Mount Whitney.
